My professional background is in library and information management. I have a Bachelor's Degree in Librarianship, a Masters Degree in Knowledge Management and qualifications in Complimentary Therapies. I have managed library and information services in Australia and the UK for many years but now work from my own therapy clinic in Tuggeranong.
I have four children and 6 grandchildren and over the years have attended many many births including over 300 in the Canberra region. My skills include assisting at hospital, birth centre, home, water, breech, assisted and multiple births, emergency and elective cesarean births and VBACs Over the years I have worked in all the Delivery Suites in the ACT region and have built good working relationships with midwives and OBs. I have experience as a breastfeeding counsellor and also with the IVF process. With a defence background, both as a child and partner, I have a particular understanding of the needs of military personal and families on the move.
Since having my first child I have been in awe of the empowerment women gain during a good birth experience, and the ongoing benefits to babies born gently. However, I had become increasingly aware that for many mothers-to-be the support and guidance of strong experienced women was not always available and they were unsure or fearful of the birth process. For years this concerned me deeply, but I felt powerless to do anything.
In 2001, after assisting at the beautiful peaceful birth of my first grandchild, a chance remark from a midwife opened a new path for me and I eventually moved on to formal certification and a career change. My teacher was Dr Christine Vose, a well respected doctor, doula and midwife with over 20 years experience.
Being a full-time Doula now allows me to support others unconditionally and help women gain the confidence they need to achieve the best possible birth experience.
Although I have retired from library management, my professional skills enable me to easily source and verify a vast range of childbirth related information. I maintain a large, well catalogued library of birth and parenting related books, films and journal articles to loan to clients, and can easily research topics of interest as they arise.
In August 2014 I made the hard decision to reduce the number of births I attend each month to returning clients, homebirths and referrals. In 2017 I have limited birthwork to repeat clients only.
I now focus on my work as a Placenta Specialist and advocate with Placenta Services Australia
I carry Professional Indemnity/Public Liability Insurance, hold a Senior First Aid certificate and am an IICT Approved Training Provider. Clients can be assured of receiving total professional commitment from the moment they engage my services.
